Dr. Short
Emergency Veterinarian

With 13 years of experience in the veterinary field, Dr. Alyssa Short brings a wealth of knowledge and a steady, capable presence to the VEHC emergency team. Her journey into medicine began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from UNCW, followed by earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM). Before becoming a veterinarian, she even spent time as an assistance dog trainer, furthering her deep understanding of the human-animal bond.
Dr. Short is a published author on camelid health and possesses a wide range of clinical interests, including exotics, wildlife, and conservation. Within the ER, she is particularly passionate about antibiotic stewardship, pain control, and nutrition. She chose emergency medicine specifically for the challenge; she thrives on the fact that every day is different and welcomes the opportunity to care for critical patients during their most difficult moments.
Dr. Short’s Best Advice: "Get pet insurance before emergencies strike."
Her home is a bustling one, shared with five beloved pets that keep her life full of activity. The family includes Eli, an 11-year-old Golden Retriever, and Beans, a 5-year-old Pomeranian mix. The feline members of the household are Chester, an 11-year-old orange long-haired cat, Pippa, a 5-year-old tabby, and Fiske, a 2-year-old long-haired cat.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Short is an avid adventurer who lived in the Caribbean for three years. She is a scuba-certified diver and has a personal goal to hike in every National Park in the United States. When she isn't traveling or long-distance running, she enjoys reading and spending time outdoors with her family.
